For those of you who want to play around with the 3D scene rendering program known as "Bryce", it is available for a short time as a free download from Download.com. Use the link below.

I recommend this for anyone who wants to see what the 3D rendering softwares are like. It is a very fun program to play around with.

Note - there is quite a bit of information and tutorials available for this version at the DAZ site WWW Link

DAZ has also indicated that the new Bryce 6 will only be available to owners of Bryce 5 and 5.5, so this would seem to be a great opportunity for those interested.

Have fun!

That usually happens to me if I shut the download page first. I downloaded the Zip file to my desktop.
So...
Free, huh? O.K...
[do I really want to do this? If Fairyy~, skinhit, and others had what Fairyy~ described happen to them, should I... ummm... Corky O posts some of the best, if not the best articles/tutes here, so...hmmm...23.5MB...got DSL...aargh!.. Yeah, what the heck. Here goes...]

Yes......because if you read what I wrote it was just the lack of directions that was the problem.

Once you open the zip file and click on the exe - when it asks you for the " registration " number that they provide......when you get the message that its wrong - click on the Check mark until it takes you to the DAZ site. Once there - open the account - wait for confirmation email - confirm - once you get logged in they will give you a very long " SERIAL number " Go back and paste that in the box that you had pasted the registration number in. All I know is that made it work...all the extra I did only made me crazy. All of this should only take 10 minutes tops - not an hour and a half like it did me.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of...State Hospital's just 20 miles away & I don't feel like pushing a lawn mower for a few yrs...

Did the "desktop" thing, as usual...hit (rightclick)>"explore"...sniffed all the files I could...

...seems harmless enough...

...better go walk the dogs first...

Yeah - but I know a lot of people that paid at least $100 for this so its worth that bit of effort to get it free. Remember - I was doing this at 3am...

Fairyy~, all kidding aside, this is really cool. Thanks for putting this out there, both you and Corky O, and all the people posting here. I know I paid a lot for CorelDraw some months ago and took it back to BestBuy before I broke the seal on the package as I needed the $$ at the time. This is a great opportunity to get into some graphic arts, something that I've wanted to try for a long time and that keeps getting postponed for one reason or another. Free?! You bet.

Free?! You bet.

Thanks to Corky_O

Before I put out large sums of money I like to learn as much as possible . i have at least 4 free programs now and 2 paid programs...Sometimes I use 3 at one time just to do something.

Free doesnt always mean sub-standard at all. It just means lucky day for those that snag it.

Thanks fo the info, Corky....haven't got a clue how to use it but got it anyway...

Actually my wife is artistically inclined and rather adept at using such proggies, so it's more for her than me.....so I'll watch and learn from her to get the hang of it, PSP and the like.

Got it, then created my first torus and orb wallpaper. I'll get that mastered first before I put a dolphin in there

Couldn't figure out how to change the size though, it only gives little poxy pics...

on Aug 23, 2006

Yeah, I couldn't get the images over like 700 wide.

Fuzzy and ID, to change the sizes go to file, then Document setup and you will be able to put in the size you want! It's on the disappearing task bar at the top. At least on 5.5 anyway.

lol....thats the only part i got right today - mainly cos another program i have you put in the size the same way. 3 hours of playing and I got nothing to show for it. But it was fun. I'll master that dolphin in the orb thingie yet...

( of course I could always steal jafo's - a little color change - a few ripples - noone will know )

I also wanted to add on the Daz website there is a special to get the 5.5 upgrade for only $20.

Island Dog, do you happen to have a link to that information? I couldn't find anything about special upgrade prices.
on Aug 23, 2006
Yes, sorry I forgot the link.

DAZ is offering the $19.95 upgrade if you create a profile (account) in their 'ArtZone', after which they will send you a coupon for the special upgrade price.

For those who have not looked, there should be (note - I am assuming they included this in the free version) a 'Bryce5_Manual' in: "C:\Program Files\DAZ\Bryce5" folder in a PDF file. If you see it there, it should have a tutorial that walks you through using most of the tools during various exercises, as well as helping to understand placing objects using the "Attibutes" menu (small "A" icon next to any selected object in your scene). If you are good with math, then this is an easy way to locate your objects in space.

On top of the program display area, there are the three main menus "Create" (create objects in your scene by clicking the shapes), "Edit" (manipulate the selected objects in your scene), and "Sky & Fog" (where you manipulate and edit the atmospheric components in your scene). If you click the "Sky & Fog" text to show the options (a bunch of small thumbnails displaying atmosphere attributes) - you can click the small 'cloud in a rainbow' icon to display the "Sky Lab" which can be used to set the sun location, fog and haze amounts, stars, cloud cover, and other attributes.

One helpful hint would be to recommend using the small white oval buttons located in the upper left area of the program display area (just above the small director's chair) to set you camera view settings. I always do the following to begin a document:

1 - Start program

2 - Go to 'File menu (in auto-hide titlebar) > Document Setup > designate the width and height of the image > set the 'Anti-Aliasing' quality (I use "Superfine" but this also lengthens the render time).

3 - Click the top 'small white oval' camera position button to set the original camera position, allowing me to return to this position anytime (especially for viewing the final rendered image which will also prevent a distorted view of objects due to angles and lighting). Note - this also allows one to play around with the camera view when manually moving objects with the mouse and return to the original viewpoint without concern.

After that it is basically create objects and use the material lab (which can be accessed using the small "M" icon beside a selected object) to apply materials to the objects.

That should get you started on a wonderful, if not confusing, adventure in the 3D world. Note - once the confusion turns to comfort, you can really have fun learning how to create the objects and materials you envision with this program.

Have fun....
